Your immigration status can affect whether you qualify for financial assistance when shopping for health insurance through Stride.
Starting with Plan Year 2027, new federal rules limit who can receive Advance Premium Tax Credits (APTC), which help lower your monthly health insurance premiums. While many lawfully present immigrants can still enroll in Marketplace plans, not everyone will qualify for federal financial assistance.
Who qualifies for APTC in 2027?
To qualify for federal APTC, you must generally be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or a noncitizen with one of the following eligible immigration statuses:
- Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), also known as a Green Card holder
- Cuban or Haitian entrant
- Compact of Free Association (COFA) migrant, including eligible citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau
You must also meet other eligibility requirements, such as applicable household income and Marketplace enrollment rules.
What if I have a different immigration status?
If you have another lawfully present immigration status, such as refugee, asylee, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), parolee, or certain student or work visas, you may still be eligible to enroll in a Marketplace plan.
However, starting in 2027, these statuses alone no longer qualify you for federal APTC or income-based cost-sharing reductions (CSR). You may still purchase a Marketplace plan at full price if you meet the Marketplace's coverage eligibility requirements.
You can find a full list of immigration statuses that may qualify for Marketplace coverage on HealthCare.gov.
What about mixed-status families?
Many households have family members with different immigration or citizenship statuses. These households can still apply for Marketplace coverage, even if not everyone qualifies for federal financial assistance.
For example, a household may include a U.S. citizen child, a parent with a Green Card, and a parent with refugee status. Each family member's eligibility for coverage and financial assistance is determined individually.
Family members who aren't applying for coverage generally don't need to provide their immigration or citizenship status.
What if I don't qualify for APTC?
If your immigration status doesn't qualify you for federal APTC, you may still be able to purchase a Marketplace plan at full price.
Depending on where you live, you may also have access to state-funded financial assistance or other affordable coverage options.
Will my immigration information be shared for immigration enforcement?
Immigration information collected through a Marketplace application is used to verify eligibility for health coverage and financial assistance. Family members who aren't applying for coverage don't need to disclose their immigration or citizenship status.
