That’s frustrating — you picked a plan, added it to your cart, moved through the enrollment steps…and then right before e-signing, the price suddenly increased 😢
This usually happens because information you entered during the full application changed how your financial assistance (premium tax credit) is calculated. When you shop for plans, the system gives you an estimate based on limited info. During the full application, the government requires more detailed questions, and your answers can increase, decrease, or remove your subsidy.
Common answers that can change or remove your subsidy
These are the most frequent reasons consumers see a price jump:
- Entering one income amount while shopping, but a significantly different income during the full application
- Selecting “No” when asked if you want financial assistance
- Indicating you do not plan to file a tax return for the upcoming year
- Indicating you are married but plan to file taxes separately (the law requires married consumers to file jointly to receive a premium tax credit, unless they qualify for a limited exception)
- Adding a household member who wasn’t included while shopping
- Entering $0 income, which typically routes you to Medicaid based on federal rules
- Indicating you are eligible for or enrolled in other minimum essential coverage (such as employer coverage, Medicare, or Medicaid) — in these cases, you won’t qualify for a tax credit and will see full-price plans
How to fix it
If you think one of these answers was selected incorrectly, you can update your application:
- Log in to your account here and return to your application.
- Update any incorrect answers — especially:
- Confirm you want to be considered for financial assistance
- Confirm you plan to file taxes
- If married, select that you will file jointly with your spouse
- Submit your updates to get new eligibility results.
Once your application is updated, the system will re-determine whether you qualify for a premium tax credit. If you regain subsidy eligibility, the correct lower price should appear again during enrollment.
