If someone in your tax household does not have a Social Security number (SSN), they may still be able to apply for Marketplace health coverage.
Under the Affordable Care Act, a person can apply for Marketplace coverage without an SSN as long as they are lawfully present and meet one of the following conditions:
- They have applied for a Social Security number
- They are not eligible for a Social Security number due to immigration status
- They decline to provide an SSN for religious reasons
When completing the application, select “This person does not have a Social Security number.”
After you apply
After submitting your application, the Marketplace may request documentation to verify identity or immigration status. If this happens, you typically have up to 90 days to submit the required documents.

Mixed-status families
Families with mixed immigration statuses can still apply for coverage.
Only individuals applying for coverage will be asked about immigration status. Household members who are not applying will not be required to provide this information.
This allows eligible family members to apply without requiring disclosure of immigration status for the entire household.
If you’re blocked in the application
If the system will not let you proceed without entering an SSN for a household member, contact us at stride.link/support and we’ll help your complete enrollment.
