If you drive at least 15 hours per week on average over the course of a quarter for a ride share or delivery company and pay for your own health insurance, you're eligible to receive the stipend. The amount of the stipend depends on how many hours you drive:
-
If you drive between 15 and 25 hours per week on average, you’re eligible for 50% of the stipend, which is $245 per month for 2024.
-
If you drive 25 hours or more per week on average, you’re eligible to receive 100% of the stipend, which is $490 per month for 2024.
There are 3 important things to keep in mind here:
-
The number of hours you drive per week will be calculated on a quarterly basis. This means you’ll need to average at least 15 hours per week or more for the entire quarter in order to receive the stipend for that quarter.
-
These hours are based on your "engaged time," which is the time from accepting a drive to completing the drive. It does not include the time spent waiting between rides.
-
You’ll need to provide proof that you’re enrolled in a health insurance plan in order to receive the stipend.
Depending on how much you drive, that stipend could be as much as $490 per month. Why that amount? It's set by Covered California, the state's health insurance administrator, and based on the average prices of health insurance plans for this year—which means that amount could change each year depending on how insurance prices change.
You can find Covered CA's official guide here: App-Based Drivers (Prop 22) Health Insurance Stipend Quick Guide
Please note: Covered California will provide a Proof of Coverage document for a given quarter once that quarter has been completed (e.g., Quarter 2 was available on 7/1, Quarter 3 was available on 10/1, and so on).
