Filing taxes can be done through a tax filing software, online, by hand, or with the help of tax preparer! There are a ton options available to you and they come at varying costs.
If you know you have a complicated tax return and are willing to spend a little extra for a tax preparer or CPA, then it’s probably worth paying extra for a licensed tax preparer. For one of these individuals (like a CPA, tax attorney, or EA), you’ll typically pay between $100-$450 per hour.
If you feel more confident that you can handle your taxes without professional help, then a tax filing software should be perfectly sufficient. Tax filing software ranges in price, from free filing through Credit Karma Tax all the way to TurboTax Self-Employed for about $80-$200, depending on the level of product you purchase.
There are also a number of free tax preparation non-profits that will help you at no charge, depending on your income. You can read more about some of these free programs here.
