California recently announced that they are offering a new Special Enrollment for health insurance between 2/18 and 4/30 to people who:
1) Claim they didn't know there was a new penalty for not having insurance and
2) They didn't know there were new state subsidies being offered
The state of California has made the process very simple and straightforward. You simply need to attest on your application that you didn't know about the new penalty and you will be able to apply for health insurance through special enrollment with a qualifying event!
No documentation will be required! Fill out your application on Stride and select your qualifying event: 1) I didn't understand there was a tax penalty or 2) I didn't understand there were additional new state subsidies.
There are a couple of important dates to keep in mind when selecting a plan with this new qualifying event. You must apply within the time windows below for your insurance to start on the corresponding date!
If you apply between 2/15-2/29, your plan will start on --> 3/1
between 3/1 – 3/31 your plan will start on --> 4/1
between 4/1 – 4/30 your plan will start on --> 5/1
Note: If you enroll by 3/31 for coverage starting on 4/1, you will avoid the CA Tax penalty all together. If you enroll after 4/1 with a coverage start date of 5/1, you will still be subject to a pro-rated penalty of 1/3 of the annual penalty amount.
