Open Enrollment Period for 2019 Coverage
Each year, the government sets aside a specific time called Open Enrollment period, where anyone can purchase a new health insurance plan for the coming year.
The national health insurance open enrollment period for major medical coverage began on Thursday, November 1, 2018 and ends on Saturday, December 15, 2018. But, some states have extended their Open Enrollment windows!
Below are the states with extended Open Enrollment periods. Check to see if you live in one of these states and take note of the enrollment window:

|Colorado||November 1, 2018 - January 15, 2019|
|Massachusetts||November 1, 2018 - January 23, 2019|
|Minnesota||November 1, 2018 - January 13, 2019|
|New York||November 1, 2018 - January 31, 2019|
|Rhode Island||November 1, 2018 - December 31, 2018|
|Washington, D.C.||November 1, 2018 - January 31, 2019|
Plan Effective Date
The effective date (also known as “start date”) for a health insurance plan bought between the national open enrollment period is January 1, 2019. If you are applying within the extended window in your state, the effective date of coverage will start at the beginning of the following month of enrollment.
Note: If you want coverage with an effective date of Jan. 1, 2019, you must enroll by Dec. 15, 2018 regardless of state.
