If you have submitted an application for a new plan for the benefit year 2020, you may need to let your carrier or exchange know that you do not want your 2019 plan to renew. Your carrier or exchange (Covered CA, Healthcare.gov, etc.) should have sent you a letter letting you know whether or not your coverage will be automatically renewed for 2020.
If you have submitted a 2020 application with a different insurance company or a different exchange for 2020, you must let your current insurance company or exchange know that you do NOT want your current coverage to renew for 2020.
How do I stop my current plan from renewing?
You need to call that insurance carrier or exchange and let them know you'd like to cancel your 2020 plan renewal. An added measure would be to contact your bank and tell them to stop accepting charges from your old insurance carrier. Ensure the cancellation date for your current plan is on or after your new coverage start date. If you're enrolling during Open Enrollment, you want your current coverage to end on 12/31/2019 so your new coverage can begin on 1/1/2020.
